Bangladesh: ’90 percent Muslim population here’, is the interim government preparing to change the constitution in Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus insisted on removing ‘secularism’ from the Constitution of Bangladesh, citing the 90 percent Muslim population in the country. During a High Court hearing on the validity of the constitutional amendment, Bangladesh’s Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman argued, "Secularism does not reflect the realities of Bangladesh, where 90% of the population is Muslim."

The Attorney General accused ‘socialism’, ‘Bengali nationalism’ and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman "Also called for removal of other key provisions like naming him as ‘Father of the Nation’. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the Preamble of the Constitution during the debate "father of the nation" Speaking on his inclusion, Asaduzzaman acknowledged the important role of Mujib in the independence of Bangladesh.

Unnecessary division among citizens encouraged

Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman said, "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s contribution to our liberation struggle is undisputed, but implementing this title in the 15th Amendment deviates from the basic spirit of the Constitution." Apart from this, on ‘Bengali nationalism’, the Attorney General criticized national identity through language and claimed that this has promoted unnecessary division among citizens.

Strong opposition to abolishing the government system

Mohammed Asaduzzaman argued that no other country uses language as the basis of national identity, making this provision unique and problematic. The Attorney General strongly opposed the abolition of the caretaker government system. The caretaker government system of Bangladesh was a system of an unelected interim government, tasked with conducting free and fair general elections.

In 2011, the Awami League-led government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina abolished the caretaker government system with the 15th constitutional amendment. This amendment was opposed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party and other parties.
